GAUTENG OPERA presents
During November, Gauteng Opera will present six short scenes from various operas. These scenes are chosen especially for the artists of Gauteng Opera to showcase their talent as versatile singers and opera artists. During June, Gauteng Opera the scenes presentation with two works from Gaetano Donizetti. All six scenes will be directed by Artistic Director for Gauteng Opera, Phenye Modiane. Andrew Duncan will accompany the artists on piano.
Cosi fan tutte – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
The scene comes from the opening act of this comic opera. Ferrando and Guglielmo is swindled into a bet with Don Alfonso that their girlfriends will stay true to them, no matter what.
Madama Butterfly – Giacomo Puccini
Cio-Cio-San (Butterfly) hears the canon shot in the harbour and looking through the telescope, sees it is Pinkerton’s ship. Excited to see her husband again after three years, she tells Suzuki to help her decorating the house with flowers to welcome him back.
Don Pasquale – Gaetano Donizetti
Don Pasquale is suspecting that his new young bride (Norina in disguise) is cheating on him and asks Dr Malatesta to assist him in catching her red-handed. Although Malatesta has his own plans, he agrees. In this very difficult, but highly entertaining patter duet, they conceive their plans.
La Sonnambula – Vincenzo Bellini
Count Rodolfo books in at an Inn, but is recognised by Lisa, the Innkeeper. She flirts with Rodolfo, but when they hear a noise outside the room, she hurries out. Seconds later, Amina enters, fast asleep. She talks of her approaching marriage with Elvino, his jealousy and their quarrel. Scared of waking her, Rodolfo blow out the candles and quietly exits his room. Still asleep, Amina sinks down upon his bed.
Le nozze di Figaro – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Countess Almaviva is sad, she feels she is losing her husband and that he does not care for her anymore. With the assistance of Susanna, she dictates a letter which Susanna must deliver to the count. This is all a plan to win back her husband.
Ziyankomo, The forbidden fruit – SBP Mnomiya
This South African opera premiered on 13 March 2012 at the SA State Theatre and the story takes place during the reign of Mpande, the Zulu king, when two of his concubines secretly found lovers. Ziyankomo, a Zulu warrior, is caught with uGabisile, one of the king’s concubines. He is condemned to death according to the traditional customs of Zululand.
Performances of Opera Scenes will take place on Friday, 17 November at 19:30 and Sunday, 19 November at 15:00. Tickets are R100 throughout and a 10% discount is available for block bookings of 10 people and more.
