Opera for the Future

Opera for the Future is focused on training and development for both post graduate students and those that have no means to study in formal institutions. Opera for the future will also have productions that serve as a platform for the Studio and Academy members to gain real opera, theatre and performing experience.

The focus for this segment is on two areas of training and development which are Gauteng Opera Academy and Gauteng Opera Studio. These two segments of Gauteng Opera will be frozen for the year 2015 as stated in the executive summary for accreditation and curriculum development reasons.

Gauteng Opera Academy

Gauteng Opera academy offers talented young singers with no formal training and from previously disadvantaged communities and from all races, the opportunity to further their studies and to gain experience through the Academy. The driving force for Gauteng Opera is to build and sustain good singing and well-rounded artists in South Africa.

The trainees will receive training in general opera disciplines including vocal and presentation techniques through regular interaction with very skilled and experienced lecturers. The trainees are also offered an opportunity to sing in minor or small roles for GAUTENG OPERA when they are ready and as and when these opportunities arise.

All singers accepted as academy members with GAUTENG OPERA ACADEMY will have their tuition fully covered by Sponsorships and Grants. With Accreditation Gauteng Opera academy will also be able to take in paying students as well.

Accreditation of Gauteng Opera Academy

Gauteng Opera and Da Vinci institute have been engaging in formalising and accrediting the GO Academy through the Da Vinci institute programmes. The certificate will be tailor-made for the opera and theatre industry and will give the trainees a fully accredited certificate that will be recognised world –wide.

Gauteng Opera Studio

Opera studios all over the world are one of the most important training phases for budding opera singers. Young singers are given the opportunity to earn their first professional engagement as interns and be guided by very experienced experts. The singers will receive training in vocal and presentation techniques through regular interaction with acclaimed singers, coaches, directors and conductors as well as Master classes.

The studio also offers an opportunity for singers to sing in minor or small roles for GAUTENG OPERA as well as more featured roles. Each singer will have individually designed programmes for them to meet their needs and aspirations.

All singers accepted as studio members with GAUTENG OPERA STUDIO will have their tuition fully covered by Sponsorships and Grants.

Programme

Intensive one-to-one coaching; A strong emphasis on ensemble work; Regular acting and movement sessions; Regular classes in music essentials; Individual and group coaching in Aria Presentation; Regular classes in Italian, German and English classes; Professional coaches to be sourced from American, British and European opera houses; Regular classes in Italian conversation.

Syllabus

Roles

GAUTENG OPERA ACADEMY/ STUDIO members will learn full roles during their learnerships period.
They will also be studying smaller roles if needed and also understudy main roles.

Ensembles will also be a big focus as the singers must learn to perform in ensemble work.

Each year the singers will give presentation of a selection from their core roles to the public and interested parties.

Masterclasses

Gauteng Opera will engage the services of well-known and successful professional singers for masterclasses

Acting

Individual and group classes will be offered in order to improve stage presence and acting skills.

Ensemble & Workshop

Studio members will be working on scenes from operas and also learn and interpret full roles.

Theoretical Work

The trainees are also required to learn the following theoretical disciplines:

  • History of Music
  • History of costumes and theatre
  • German, Italian, English
  • Music

Practical Work

The trainees are also required to learn the following theoretical disciplines:

  • Singing
